Glacial Braided River Plain in the Southern Alps of New Zealand
southern alps · braided river · new zealand · glacial meltwater
A medium-format landscape photograph looking down a wide, braided glacial river valley in Canterbury, New Zealand. Silvery and pale turquoise ribbons of meltwater weave intricate, branching paths across a broad riverbed of grey slate and limestone gravel. On both sides, steep mountain flanks rise in rich gradations of golden tussock grass and dark beech forest, culminating in craggy snow-draped massifs at the head of the valley. A low morning sun casts elongated shadows across the gravel bars, making the water channels shimmer like molten silver. The wide 3:2 frame conveys an extraordinary feeling of openness, silence, and geologic scale, photographed with a 45mm lens stopped down to f/11 for edge-to-edge optical fidelity.
